Johor Premium Outlets (JPO)

Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) Malaysia was officially opened on December 11th 2011 and this is the first ever proper Factory Outlet in Malaysia and Southeast Asia which is located at Kulaijaya in the Iskandar Malaysia zone. A dream come true for many Malaysians and Singaporeans, the JPO is strategically located for the convenience of both countries and also for those travelers passing through Malaysia. For Singaporean shoppers, the Johor Factory Outlet is located about half an hours drive from the Singapore Tuas Checkpoint or 2nd Link while for those coming from Kuala Lumpur, it will be a 3-4 hour drive from the city.

Johor Premium Outlets caters to many international brands like Coach, Versace, Armani, Salvatore Ferragamo, Adidas, Nike, Ralph Lauren, Timberland on sale from 25% to 70%, many foreigners and travelers would easily take advantage of our favorable exchange rate as after converting from the Ringgit to Singapore or US dollars, it is also much cheaper than many other places around the world. When fully ready by early 2012, there will be a total of 130 shops within an area of 16,258 square meters located at JPO making this one of the top factory outlets in Southeast Asia to visit. Be prepared to spend at least a minimum of half a day or a  full day here too.

How cheap is it at the Premium Outlets in Johor? A writer from Singapore Times quoted that prices were pretty decent comparing the items here and in Singapore. Zegna ties, which cost S$290 each at the boutique in Takashimaya, were about 55 per cent less at RM315 (S$130). High heels from Salvatore Ferragamo, which typically sell for S$790 here, cost RM1,040 (S$430) in the republic. Prices are definitely lower but American brands like Coach are much cheaper in the US, noted a shopper who spent around RM700 (S$289) on a pair of sunglasses, a watch and a handbag at the JPO.

How does the outlet stores work? JPO retailers sell leftover stock from past seasons while some items were exclusively made by the brands for their outlet stores. Store managers said that because theirs are outlet shops, some signature products are not available meaning the latest designs will not be available here. However, many shoppers are still hoping for the prices to go on more discounts in the near future.

Built at a cost of RM150 million (US$47 million), the Factory Outlet occupies a total area of 44 acres and is situated in the middle of an oil palm plantation. This project is under the Genting Simon group who is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Simon Genting Ltd, which in turn is a 50:50 joint venture between Genting Plantation's Azzon Ltd and Premium Outlets, the outlet division of Simon Property Group.

JPO's future plans include the construction of a water park, convention centre and a 2,000-room hotel, all within the vicinity making this place one of the must visit places in Iskandar Johor. The much talked about theme park, Legoland Malaysia is also set to open by late 2012 around here and will blend in well with the overall Iskandar project.

You can also read about my visit to Rinku Premium Outlet in Osaka, Japan when I visited this place in early December 2011. This is exactly the same layout as they are part of the Factory Outlet chain. For those who are heading to Johor State in 2012, you may be pleased to know that the soon to be opened theme park,Legoland Malaysia will be in the Nusajaya district of Iskandar.

For more information, you can visit the Johor Premium Outlets website. The brand is wholly owned by theSimon Property Group who operates many other outlets around the world. This is the first of the outlets to be opened in Malaysia and Southeast Asia making it the 70th outlet in the world. For those who have been dreaming of shopping at a Factory Outlet like the ones in the USA, you can now do so at the Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) in Malaysia.
